Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance (GTMA) Collaborates with Seneca College on ICT Study

GTMA partners with Seneca College of Applied Arts & Technology once again to undergo Phase II of the Seneca ICT Study. The Seneca ICT Study will measure the key success factors and challenges in Ontario’s high-growth companies in the Information Communication & Technology (ICT) sector to enhance the investment readiness of Ontario Technology Corridor (OTC) partners. The study area encompasses representatives of the OTC including the GTA, Ottawa, Kitchener and Waterloo. The study is conducted by Seneca’s Business Intelligence Unit (BIU) on behalf of industry partners Herman Miller, InterfaceFLOR, Colliers and Town of Markham.

Phase I of the ICT Study was completed in spring 2008 and analyzed major factors that distinguish success from failure while also identifying opportunities within the company. The study examined various aspects of what is considered to be a successful company and common factors shared by companies that are winning the game in their respective ICT markets.

Phase II of the project will quantify the relative importance of key success factors and challenges that were identified in Phase I and provide insights into the ICT industry to providers of products and services. A better understanding of the industry will enable providers to fine tune their own product and service offerings. Phase II will be published in February 2009 and will provide the OTC with a much better understanding of the current status of GTA’s ICT sector. New ICT entrants to the GTA, in particular, will have a better chance of success if they know the key success factors and challenges of other firms in their industry.  The results and data from the study will complement GTMA’s existing ICT sector information and profile and used in responding to investment inquiries.

GTMA Partners with Greater Toronto Area Agricultural Action Committee (GTA AAC) to Undertake the GTA Agricultural Study

GTMA is partnering with the Greater Toronto Area Agricultural Action Committee (GTA AAC) to undertake the GTA Agricultural Economic Impact and Investment Opportunity Study. The overall project will provide an update on the status and key trends in the GTA agriculture industry, as well as report on economic opportunities associated with agriculture in the GTA. The study area encompasses the Greater Toronto Area including the Regions of Halton, Peel, York and Durham and the City of Toronto.

A major component of the Agriculture study is to update the GTA Agricultural Economic Impact Study (2003), which acts as the basis for GTA Agricultural Action Plan (2005). The GTMA originally partnered with the GTA AAC in developing the GTA Agricultural Economic Impact Study in 1999 with an update followed in 2003. The study reports on the location and nature of agriculture in the GTA, assesses the direct, indirect and induced economic impact of agriculture in the study area, address land availability and discusses the benefits of having a healthy, active agriculture community.

Circumstances have changed dramatically in the GTA for the business of farming with the arrival of the Greenbelt and a Growth Plan. Both assume that farming will have a permanent presence in the GTA. In the past, GTA farmland was just development land in-waiting. The Greenbelt and the Growth Plan only provide planning support for GTA agriculture. An updated profile and an analysis of opportunities for the business of farming are needed to support the permanent presence of farming in the GTA. The GTMA is proud to once again support this initiative and the growth of GTA’s agriculture sector.

The final report will be published in March 2009 and will be made available to GTMA public and private partners. The GTA Agricultural Study will provide first-hand knowledge of opportunities for foreign direct investment in the GTA agricultural industries and a thorough profile of the status of the GTA agriculture sector. It will also provide a strategic audit of the 2005 GTA Action Plan with recommendations regarding future goals, which will be presented to the GTA AAC.

Phoenix-Tucson Arizona Investment Attraction & Awareness Building

As a result of Arizona’s Governor Janet Napolitano visit in October, 2007, the GTMA has been exploring opportunities in that state from an investment attraction perspective. Since the Governor’s visit to the GTA, there have been a number of exploratory exchange visits between economic development organizations from both sides of the border. The most recent visit was in December which was organized by Canadian Consulate in Phoenix. Lou Milrad, Chairman & CEO and Gerald Pisarzowski VP Business Development met with representatives from state, regional and local economic development organizations as well as local universities, research organizations and business to discuss business opportunities in the Phoenix-Tucson corridor.

These discussions explored opportunities in such key sectors as clean tech (particularly solar and biofuels), agriculture/agriculture technology, IT, aerospace, border security, building materials, photonics, biotech and e-health. Collaboration in research and development and workforce training may present some opportunities for colleges and universities. Of particular interest is the key Arizona focus of the TSX Venture Exchange as its top US location for promoting public listing opportunities. This was again quite evident at the Invest Southwest Capital Conference, the third major Phoenix event sponsored by the TSX in the last year.

Collaboration discussions are underway with a variety of organizations that include the Canada Arizona Business Council, GPEC, Arizona Department of Commerce, the City of Phoenix, Arizona State University (ASU) - Poly Technical Campus, SkySong business and innovation centre, and the Greater Phoenix Innovation & Technology Association (GPITA).

Discussions are also underway for bilateral collaboration in creating new business opportunities and mission exchange, with the first being planned as a mission to the GTA in search of new business with a reciprocal mission to Phoenix occurring in the late 2009/early 2010. The GTMA would like to thank Rick Stephenson, Dawn Nagle and the entire Consulate team in Phoenix for putting together a terrific program.  It surpassed all of our expectations and we look forward to working with them in the near future.

If you would like to learn more about the program or the GTMA’s plans for Arizona and the Southwest please contact Gerald Pisarzowski at or .

Ontario Technology Corridor UK Sales & Awareness Building

GTMA’s participated in a highly successful sales trip to the UK organized on behalf of the Ontario Technology Corridor (OTC) by the Ontario Investment Centre in London. The OTC team included representatives from MITI, CTT, GTMA, OCRI and Ontario’s In-Market Business Consultant. The program focused around a “Brief the Briefers” road show in London, Cambridge and Birmingham in November ’08. The goal was to position the OTC as the choice investment and export location for British ICT companies looking to expand, locate or do business in North America.  The audience at each stop was primarily UK International Trade Advisors, associations, government representatives and private sector investment influencers who regularly advise UK firms on investment/export opportunities specifically in North America.

The program enhanced the OTC’s working relationships with the investment influencers and set the stage for discussions on bilateral collaboration with the British Midlands Development Corporation and East of England Economic Development Association. The GTMA would like to thank Clare Barnett and Cheryl Donais at the Ontario Investment Centre in London for organizing a brilliant program that certainly surpassed our expectations and for keeping the team on schedule and successfully getting us from London and back!

If you would like to learn more about the OTC and the program for 2009 please contact Gerald Pisarzowski at or .

John R. Nay, Consul General of the United States of America Addresses the International Leadership Breakfast Club

The U.S. and Canada share the largest and most comprehensive trading relationship in the world. It is reflected in the staggering volume of bilateral trade--the equivalent of $1.5 billion a day in goods--and about 300,000 people cross the shared border every day. The GTMA understands the importance this relationship has on our continuing efforts to promote our region to international investors and increase the profile of the GTA a preferred location for investment.

The GTMA’s greatest strength has traditionally been its strong and growing network of international relationships. With a new incoming U.S. President and administration and ever changing global markets, the GTMA welcomed this opportunity to better understand the impact these events might have on business on both a national and global level. This was also an opportunity for the GTMA to continue to work with the American consulate staff to encourage and support direct investment in the GTA from our southern neighbour.

The sold-out event generated much discussion on the possible focus and scope of the President-Elect Barak Obama’s international strategy on foreign policy, economic agenda and priorities.

The GTMA would like to thank our speaker sponsor, the Consulate General of the United States of America; our media sponsor, Canadian Business; our supporting sponsor, Compass Promotions; and our venue sponsor, the Ontario Investment & Trade Centre. For information on the ILBC, please contact Michelle Cortez, Program Coordinator at or .
