Toronto – Ontario: On March 2nd, 2004, the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance paid tribute to this year’s recipients of the GTA International Awards of Distinction. The awards are presented in recognition of the outstanding achievements by individuals or organizations that have contributed to raising the international profile of the Greater Toronto Area through their leadership, marketing and investment attraction activities.

Meeting the challenges and beating the odds in 2003 truly required the collective efforts of some extraordinary individuals and organizations. Today’s announcement, and the gala dinner attended by over 350 guests from across the GTA at the Four Season Hotel Toronto, builds on the strong spirit of partnership generated by both the public and private sector in working collaboratively with the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance.

“The Toronto region faced tremendous economic challenges in 2003. Tonight’s award recipients speak fundamentally about the fabric of our community and the premise that a strong economy is founded on the strength of individuals and the communities they represent. Tonight we pay tribute to those individuals and their leadership,” remarked Renato Discenza, Chair, Board of Directors, GTMA.

The spirit of the 2004 GTA International Awards of Distinction reflects this collective partnership, which in 2003 stretched the boundaries of traditional collaboration in re-establishing confidence in investing in our region and creating opportunities for economic growth and prosperity. Elyse Allan of the Toronto Board of Trade, Molson Canada, Siemens Business Services of Canada, Ian Martin Ltd, and Dr. Sheela Basrur are among the distinguished list of winners of this year’s award. The evening also paid tribute to Mayor Hazel McCallion, the recipient of the Outstanding Achievement Award for her Worship’s longstanding commitment and leadership to economic development in the GTA.

“ This kind of recognition is wonderful,” said George Fierheller, Chair of the Jury Committee. “ And I think it speaks volumes about dedication, that, in spite of trying times, the 2004 Awards of Distinction winners continued to exercise steadfast commitment to promoting the region across the province, Canada and around the world. We are truly honored and privileged to have such leaders in our community.”

In just five years, the GTMA has built an impressive cooperative partnership both locally and internationally, with public and private sector partners, to effectively promote the GTA internationally.

“The GTMA is a partnership between business and government, working together to raise the international profile of the Greater Toronto Area and attract business investment to the region. Through the support and participation of our public and private sector partners, the GTMA has proven to be an effective vehicle for promoting economic growth in our community. The presentation of the GTA International Awards of Distinction recognizes the vision, the capacity and talents of the leaders who have helped to contribute to the success of the GTMA,” said Karen Campbell, President & CEO, GTMA.
