$7-billion Ontario renewable energy project will be largest of its kind in the world
Dallas, TX – WINDPOWER 2010 – May 25, 2010 - Executives from the Ontario Technology Corridor are attending WINDPOWER 2010 in Dallas to show wind energy companies from around the world that Ontario is the best place in North America to expand or relocate their businesses. The Canadian province offers targeted alternative energy and clean technology incentives, a deep talent pool, and strong and stable economy.

“For the wind industry, our most compelling attraction is the Ontario Power Authority’s feed-in tariff, or FIT Program. If You’re Talking Nuclear, You’re talking … GTA
(an excerpt from Q1 2010 Issue of VANTAGE)

Around the world, an industry that grew quickly and then went dormant for 30 years is making a comeback.

Yes, we’re talking nuclear power, and it’s entering a global renaissance that will likely see the construction of more than 400 new plants in the coming years.

These plants will be built in developed nuclear nations as replacements to original plant that has come to the end of its operating life. New constructions will be built in developing nations such as China, India, and Brazil to ease their tremendous thirst for electricity. They will also be built in a diverse range of smaller states such as the United Arab Emirates, Nigeria, and Lithuania that are seeking energy security and sustainability. Ontario is itself planning two new reactors to be added to the Darlington site just east of Toronto on Lake Ontario. more…

Sustainable Energy Innovation at UOIT
(an excerpt from Q1 2010 Issue of VANTAGE)

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) was created by legislative act in 2002. The first students were accepted into programs in 2003. The undergraduate numbers have grown from about 900 undergraduates to over 6000 currently; the graduate program numbers have grown from zero to over 300. UOIT has won recognition for its unique programs, collaborative research and research funding, and positive student experiences all within the parameters of a technology-intensive orientation in all of its faculties.

Energy awareness, conservation, the environment and programs were part of the initial vision of UOIT at its very inception and continue to play a central role. Green roofs and metal-oxide coated glass are the most visible of its structural environmental attributes, however underlying that is a geothermal heating and cooling system, Canada’s largest and the second largest in North America. If laid end to end, the piping required to supply heat from the thermal wells would run from the north Oshawa campus to Toronto Pearson International Airport – approximately 80 kilometres. more…

A Message From Sandra Pupatello, Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Ontario

Ontario is Open for Business - Running a business just got easier.

We asked. You spoke. We listened. Yesterday, I presented our new Open for Business Act to the Ontario Legislature.  This bill will make it easier and less costly for companies in all sectors to do business in Ontario, while at the same time protecting the environment and the public interest.

Please take the time to read the attached news report on our OFB legislation from the Toronto Star and go to our website to see what we’re doing.  The Ontario government aims to reduce the regulatory and compliance burden for business by 25% by March 2011, so there’s more work to be done. I welcome your input.

Town of Caledon Reaching International Markets with the GTMA

The Town of Caledon's reputation as "the natural course of business" continues to extend well-beyond Canadian borders.

For the past 11 years, the Town has been a member of the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance (GTMA) . In recognizing the benefits from the joint venture activities and programs of the GTMA, Caledon Council recently approved continuing the Town's membership and the formalization of an International Marketing Services Agreement.

As a member, Caledon benefits from the GTMA's international marketing and promotion programs. Additionally, the GTMA acts as the primary contact for foreign business delegations and tours to the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), provides access to sector-specific research reports, and offers opportunities for networking and professional development.

"As with the other municipal partners, Caledon endorses the principle that the Greater Toronto Area is a globally-recognized destination," noted Mayor Marolyn Morrison. "Working as a partner in the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance gives Caledon a stronger voice and presence in attracting foreign direct investment."

The GTMA was founded in 1997 for the specific purpose of enhancing the international marketing of the GTA. The GTMA, a not-for-profit corporation, serves as the key point of contact for foreign businesses exploring location opportunities in the GTA.

Caledon's membership aligns with the 2008-2012 Caledon Economic Development Strategy of engaging in business attraction programs designed to encourage investment in key target sectors and clusters.

Richard Florida: Toronto Could Use a Good Civic Crisis

Toronto and its extended region need to grow. Our mega-region, which spans Montreal to Waterloo and across the border to Buffalo and Rochester, is home to 22 million people and generates $530 billion in economic output. But we are dwarfed by the truly gargantuan mega-regions surrounding New York and Chicago, which each produce roughly $2 trillion in economic output annually. Bigger cities and bigger mega-regions have faster metabolisms and bigger markets, and they are more innovative. Greater Toronto has to increase its size and scale fast. But adding more people — even 2 million people by 2031, as the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance anticipates — will not be enough. We have to borrow size by expanding our borders. more…
